If you've had other hobbies you usually know what you like right away. Beer tasting is like exploring. My wife will buy a glass of wine first and then know in about a minute if she likes it or not. It is kind of like that hit or miss. I'm the same as I have to buy a bottle or a glass of beer with my dinner and then I know in about a minute if I like it. You know what you generally like after you've had a few over time.
I came to love the style from the company pictured above. These are some old bottles I kept from the Frankenmuth Brewery in Frankenmuth, Michigan. I forgot I still had these around the house. Oktoberfest and the Dark were my two favorite beers before a tornado and fire would shut the brewery down for a few years. When it reopened the brewery had a different brewmaster and owner. The taste was never the same. The new brewmaster had his own good points, but he definitely didn't brew like Fred Scheer did. The food is better than the previous owner, but the brewmaster has a different style. You could call these beers as extinct or historical brews as they no longer exist. I've tried the new ones coming from the brewery and it seems that the Old Detroit Amber Ale, pictured in the middle, is the original recipe. This is why homebrewing is so important. I might be able to recreate those same brews. This blog should help you to brew beer better as I will help you to see how I overcame the obstacles to produce a particular style.
